# Ophthalmic Optics & Vision Correction

## Ophthalmic Optics & Vision Correction: segment scope

This segment covers the physical optics that sit between a diagnosis and a corrected eye. It is narrower than ophthalmology as a whole, which also carries ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and diagnostic imaging, and narrower than vision care as a whole, which also carries retail eyewear, optometry services and lens care consumables.

Four product families define the perimeter:

- Intraocular lenses — monofocal, toric, extended-depth-of-focus and multifocal implants used in cataract and refractive lens exchange surgery, plus the femtosecond laser platforms that prepare the eye for them.

- Contact lenses — daily disposable, reusable, toric and multifocal soft lenses, and rigid gas permeable lenses.

- Spectacle optics — prescription lens blanks, progressive and freeform surfacing, and the coatings and treatments applied to them.

- Refractive laser optics — excimer and femtosecond platforms used in LASIK, SMILE and surface ablation, and the wavefront and topography systems that drive their treatment planning.

Excluded from the perimeter: ophthalmic pharmaceuticals (including anti-VEGF biologics), diagnostic and monitoring hardware (optical coherence tomography, fundus cameras, tonometers, perimeters), eye banks and tissue, and pure retail and service revenue on eyewear.

Demand is structurally anchored by 2.2 billion people living with near or distance vision impairment, including at least 1 billion cases assessed as preventable or still unaddressed. Supply is concentrated: a small number of vertically integrated manufacturers hold the great majority of global intraocular lens and contact lens revenue, and entry requires sterile single-use manufacturing, biocompatible polymer supply and multi-jurisdictional device approval.
