# Vanadium

## What the vanadium segment covers

Vanadium is a transition metal whose commercial identity is split in two. The first identity is metallurgical: vanadium is added to steel in grams per tonne to raise strength and fatigue resistance, and it is added to titanium master alloys where its strength-to-weight contribution has no acceptable substitute. That identity accounts for the overwhelming majority of tonnage and moves with steel output, not with technology narratives.

The second identity is electrochemical. In a vanadium redox flow battery the electrolyte *is* vanadium, which makes the metal the marginal cost of an extra hour of storage duration. That gives vanadium a genuine claim on the long-duration segment of the energy storage market — and it gives the segment a second, higher-purity demand curve that a metallurgical supply chain cannot serve without purification and qualification.

## How the market is structured

World mine production is on the order of 100,000 tonnes of vanadium content a year, and it is unusually concentrated: China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil account for effectively all of it. The concentration does not translate into pricing power, because most of the metal is recovered as a by-product or co-product — Chinese tonnage comes largely out of vanadium-bearing iron ore processed for steel, so output responds to steel decisions rather than to the vanadium price.

The result is a market with two structural features that matter to buyers. Supply is price-inelastic on the way down, because neither a co-product operation nor an indebted primary mine can switch output off. And supply is specification-constrained on the way up, because battery-grade material requires a purity and a provenance that most of the world’s tonnage does not carry.

## What this segment covers

- Mine and co-product supply by origin, with primary versus slag-based routes separated

- The product ladder: vanadium pentoxide flake and powder, vanadium trioxide, ferrovanadium, vanadium nitride, and battery electrolyte

- End-use demand across steel, aerospace titanium master alloys, catalysts and chemicals, and redox flow batteries

- Trade flows and import dependence, including the sources that supply the United States

- Price formation across metallurgical and battery-grade grades, and the contracting structures used to move off a single spot benchmark

Coverage under this segment includes country-level supply studies where a single producer or a single deposit carries a national export position, and global studies of the flow-battery electrolyte chain.

## Coverage in this segment

[Brazil Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5) Market Report, Size & Forecast 2026–2033](https://www.pheonixresearch.com/mining-metals/vanadium/market-report/brazil-vanadium-pentoxide-market/) — 11,400 tonnes and USD 130.69 million in 2026, reaching 14,300 tonnes and USD 220.68 million by 2033. Brazil supplies 47% of US pentoxide imports, 80.06% of the country's own output comes from one mine, and the forecast's terminal price still sits 7.98% below the all-in cost of that asset.
