# Brazil Vanadium Pentoxide Market to Reach USD 220.68 Million by 2033 as 47% of US V2O5 Imports Rests on One Bahia Mine — Pheonix Research

**SÃO PAULO, 22 October 2026** — Brazil supplies **47 per cent of the vanadium pentoxide the United States imports** and **6.4 per cent of the world's mined vanadium supply**. Both figures are correct, and the distance between them is the market. One is a trade route. The other is an orebody. Brazil's vanadium position is not a national industry at all: it is a single mine in Bahia State, 99.94 per cent owned by one listed company, with a 31-year life and a 494-person workforce.

Pheonix Research's new report, *Brazil Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5) Market Report, Size & Forecast 2026–2033: Supply, Exports and US Import Dependence*, values the Brazilian pool at **11,400 tonnes and USD 130.69 million in 2026**, rising to **14,300 tonnes and USD 220.68 million by 2033** — a **3.29 per cent volume CAGR** against a **7.77 per cent value CAGR**.

The gap between those two rates is the report's central finding, and it is not a mix effect:

- Value compounds 2.36 times faster than volume, and price does 56 per cent of that work. Realised price rises from USD 11,464 to USD 15,432 a tonne (USD 5.20 to USD 7.00 a pound). The forecast is a recovery off a trough, not a growth story.

- One company holds 80.06 per cent of national supply — a Herfindahl–Hirschman index of 6,410, roughly two and a half times the conventional threshold for a highly concentrated market. Pheonix records exactly one tier-one player, which is unusual for a country report and is the honest number.

- In 2025 the anchor producer sold at or below cash cost. Cash operating cost guidance of USD 4.50 to USD 5.50 a pound straddles a benchmark of USD 4.86.

- Implied all-in unit cost was USD 7.56 a pound (USD 16,663 a tonne) once depreciation, impairment and financing are carried, against USD 10,714 of revenue per tonne — a loss of USD 5,949 on every tonne sold.

- The forecast's terminal price of USD 7.00 a pound sits 7.98 per cent below that cost. At 2033 volumes the shortfall is USD 17.61 million.

- Battery-grade pentoxide realises 1.92 times metallurgical flake on 6.0 per cent of the tonnage — too small to move the pool today, and the only line that can reprice it tomorrow.

- Scenarios: USD 171.96 million conservative, USD 220.68 million base, USD 274.78 million optimistic — a band of −22.08 per cent to +24.52 per cent that understates how asymmetric the outcomes really are.

## The 47 per cent is true, and it measures something narrower than it sounds

Set the import share beside Brazil's share of world mine production — 6,400 tonnes of contained vanadium out of roughly 100,000 — and the two statements describe a mid-sized producer that becomes a strategic one by virtue of where it ships rather than how much it makes. The United States produces no vanadium from primary ore and met the equivalent of **58 per cent of its apparent consumption from imports**, with metallurgical applications accounting for about **94 per cent of reported consumption**.

Combining the two published ratios puts Brazil at roughly **27 per cent of US vanadium consumption**. That is a bridge between two ratios struck on different bases, and the report labels it as such rather than presenting a derived figure as a measurement.

## The forecast, in one table

 | Indicator | | 2026 | | 2033 | | CAGR |

 | Volume, tonnes V2O5 equivalent | | 11,400 | | 14,300 | | 3.29% |

 | Realised price, USD per tonne | | 11,464 | | 15,432 | | 4.34% |

 | Realised price, USD per pound | | 5.20 | | 7.00 | | 4.34% |

 | Market value, USD million | | 130.69 | | 220.68 | | **7.77%** |

Volume is capped by an orebody and value is carried by a price recovery, which makes the two lines behave nothing alike. Adding 2,900 tonnes in seven years is a **39 per cent recovery problem and a 61 per cent throughput problem**: moving from 80.1 per cent recovery to 90 per cent supplies 1,132 tonnes with no new ore, while the remaining 1,768 tonnes need capital that a sub-cost price will not finance.

## In 2025 the producer carrying 80 per cent of the market sold below cash cost

Largo Inc.'s [Maracás Menchen mine](https://www.largoinc.com/our-business/maracas-menchen-mine/) produced **9,150 tonnes of V2O5 equivalent in 2025** — 3.68 per cent below the floor of its own guidance — and sold 8,686 tonnes at an 80.1 per cent recovery rate. The cost stack, built entirely from the operator's own disclosures, is the clearest statement of the trough:

 | Line | | USD per pound V2O5 | | USD per tonne V2O5 | | Basis |

 | Cash operating cost, low end | | 4.50 | | 9,921 | | 2025 guidance |

 | Cash operating cost, high end | | 5.50 | | 12,125 | | 2025 guidance |

 | Benchmark price, September 2025 | | 4.86 | | 10,714 | | Chinese V2O5 benchmark |

 | All-in unit cost, implied | | 7.56 | | 16,663 | | Revenue per tonne plus disclosed pre-tax loss per tonne |

At the top of its own guidance range, the producer was selling below cash cost. At the bottom it kept roughly **USD 793 a tonne**. Add depreciation, impairment and financing and the same tonne carried USD 16,663 of cost against USD 10,714 of revenue — the USD 5,949 loss per tonne the company reported across 8,686 tonnes, and a pre-tax loss of **USD 51.7 million**.

## The base case never reaches the all-in cost of the asset producing it

The forecast's terminal price of USD 7.00 a pound is **7.98 per cent below the implied all-in cost of USD 7.56**. At 2033 volumes, the tonnes are worth USD 220.68 million at market against USD 238.29 million at the producer's cost — a **USD 17.61 million gap**.

That is not pessimism, it is arithmetic with a consequence: a market whose largest supplier cannot fund expansion from its own margin does not expand on schedule, and the volume line is capped accordingly. It is also the reason the growth decomposes the way it does, and the reason the capital went somewhere else.

## The capital went to the co-product

Largo's ilmenite concentration plant, completed in 2023, takes feedstock from the same vanadium operations. Flotation circuits installed from September 2025 were designed to lift concentrate capacity from **42,000 to 115,000 tonnes a year — a 2.74-fold increase** — against a vanadium volume forecast that adds **25.4 per cent over seven years**.

Read the two numbers together and the allocation is unambiguous. In the worst price environment the metal has seen in a decade, the funded expansion went to the titanium co-product, on the same orebody, using the same concentrator and the same people. That is not diversification; it is fixed-cost absorption, and it is the only strategy available to a single-asset primary producer in a trough.

## Three producers in the world, one of them holding 80 per cent of Brazil

[Bushveld Minerals](https://www.bushveldminerals.com/) describes the primary universe as *one of only three producers in the world, owning two of the planet's four operating primary vanadium processing facilities*. Largo describes itself as the world's largest primary vanadium producer. Both statements can be true at once, and together they describe three named primary participants with one enormous co-product mass behind them: Chinese tonnage at **68 per cent of world supply**, recovered from vanadium-bearing iron ore processed for steel, appearing whether or not the vanadium price justifies it.

That is why 80 per cent of a national market does not buy pricing power. A producer holding 80.06 per cent of a market that is 6.4 per cent of world supply cannot set the benchmark; it can only choose which grade of a benchmark-priced product it sells.

## The specification, not the tonne, decides the price

The pool splits by product form into a narrow commodity band and one differentiated line:

 | Product | | Realisation, USD/t | | Multiple of metallurgical flake | | Share of pool value |

 | Battery-grade pentoxide and electrolyte | | 21,053 | | 1.92× | | 11.0% |

 | Ferrovanadium | | 13,114 | | 1.19× | | 16.0% |

 | Vanadium nitride | | 11,793 | | 1.07× | | 9.3% |

 | V2O5 flake, metallurgical grade | | 10,989 | | 1.00× | | 55.6% |

 | Catalysts and chemical intermediates | | 7,152 | | 0.65× | | 8.1% |

Metallurgical products — flake, ferrovanadium, nitride — are **80.9 per cent of the value inside a 1.19-times band**. Alloying is a conversion business with a thin, published premium. The one genuinely differentiated product carries a 1.92-times multiple on 6.0 per cent of the tonnage. On the end-use cut, battery-grade material and aerospace master alloys together take 13.0 per cent of the tonnage and 20.35 per cent of the value.

The trap for a buyer is to negotiate on the average. A tonne of metallurgical flake at USD 10,989 and a tonne of electrolyte-grade pentoxide at USD 21,053 are both “a tonne of V2O5” in a contract schedule and are not the same purchase. The negotiation is which specification the price refers to.

## Destination, concentration and the balance sheet

The United States takes **41.65 per cent of the tonnage and 44.14 per cent of the value**, and the destination set is not assumed: it is cross-checked against the five jurisdictions in which Largo publishes pentoxide safety data sheets — North America, Europe, China, Brazil and South Korea. A producer does not maintain regulatory documentation in a market it does not sell into.

Because Brazil is 80.06 per cent one company, country-level risk here is not a portfolio of mine risks. A single production interruption at Maracás Menchen would remove roughly four-fifths of the national pool and roughly a third of US pentoxide imports in the same month. Behind it sits a balance sheet that sets the timetable: **USD 9.7 million of cash against USD 107.1 million of debt**, a **USD 84.2 million deferral** to March 2026, and a rollover to September conditional on raising **USD 22 million**. The cost-to-price gap of USD 17.61 million is **80.0 per cent of that condition**.

## Scenarios: the downside is a continuation, the upside is an achievement

 | Scenario | | Volume 2033 | | Price | | Value 2033 | | vs base |

 | Conservative | | 13,000 t | | USD 6.00/lb | | USD 171.96m | | −22.08% |

 | **Base** | | **14,300 t** | | **USD 7.00/lb** | | **USD 220.68m** | | **—** |

 | Optimistic | | 15,200 t | | USD 8.20/lb | | USD 274.78m | | +24.52% |

The conservative case is not a demand failure: it is what happens if recovery stalls at 80.1 per cent and the price recovers only to the top of the producer's cash cost range. The optimistic case requires two things at once — throughput capital the base case says will not be financed, and a battery-grade premium that is contracted rather than spot.

Pheonix records overall market risk as **high**, geopolitical exposure as **high**, and substitution risk as **moderate**: substitutes exist in steel, none exists in aerospace titanium alloys, and the battery application has no substitute at all because the electrolyte is the metal.

## Regulation is a margin risk, not a volume risk

Vanadium production in Brazil sits inside the general mining regime rather than a bespoke one. Mineral titles are administered by the [Agência Nacional de Mineração](https://www.gov.br/anm/pt-br) (ANM), which also operates the mining register, annual production reporting and collection of the financial compensation for mineral exploitation (CFEM). CFEM is levied on gross revenue rather than profit, so it scales with the price line and not the volume line — taking a smaller share of a trough tonne than an income-based royalty, and a larger share of a recovered one.

On the demand side the regime is not a restriction but an absence: the United States produced no vanadium from primary ore and imports 58 per cent of its consumption. Nothing in that position restricts Brazilian material — it rewards it. A tariff or a sourcing preference would not reduce demand for vanadium; it would reprice the origin of supply, and the only origin that can absorb a reprice without building a mine is the one already shipping.

## Basis of estimate

The pool was built bottom-up rather than extrapolated from a global total. National mine production was taken from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries vanadium series in contained metal (6,400 tonnes in 2023) and converted to V2O5 equivalent at 56 per cent vanadium content, giving 11,429 tonnes; the primary share was computed rather than assumed, from 9,150 tonnes of V2O5 equivalent at Maracás Menchen — 5,124 tonnes of contained vanadium, or 80.06 per cent of the national figure. Value was forecast as volume multiplied by a benchmark-anchored realised price, with form-level and end-use premiums applied so that every segmentation cut reconciles to the same 11,400 tonnes and USD 130.69 million.

Three limitations are disclosed rather than smoothed over. The **47 per cent import-source share is stated on the USGS series and could not be re-parsed this cycle**, because the commodity sheet returned as compressed binary and the USGS landing pages returned network errors; it is presented as a stated figure, not a verified one. The **Brazilian regulatory framework is stated as the operative regime** rather than read instrument by instrument, and no rate, threshold or deadline is asserted beyond the existence and function of the instruments named. And **prices are modelled, not observed**: USD 5.20 a pound for 2026 and USD 7.00 for 2033 against a September 2025 benchmark of USD 4.86. No cross-tabulation of product form against destination or end use is published, because no source publishes the cells.
