# Industrial & Transit Packaging

## Industrial and Transit Packaging

Industrial and transit packaging is the part of the packaging industry that carries dry bulk materials — cement, minerals, fertiliser, chemicals, aggregates, animal feed and construction inputs — from a production plant to a site where they are consumed. It is the least consumer-facing segment of packaging and the one most tightly bound to heavy industry: demand moves with tonnes of material shipped, not with retail volumes or household spending.

The segment is organised around four format families. Multiwall paper sacks dominate in Europe, North America and much of Africa, where moisture control, print quality and recyclability carry weight. Woven polypropylene sacks dominate in India, South Asia and parts of the Middle East and Africa, where cost per bag is the binding constraint. Block-bottom valve bags occupy the premium end of both, because they fill and palletise faster. Flexible intermediate bulk containers — FIBCs or big bags — compete directly with the 25-tonne bulk tanker, and where they win, the sack market disappears with the sale rather than sharing it.

Four structural questions decide the economics of the segment. First, the bulk-versus-bagged split: every tonne moved in bulk is a tonne of packaging demand that never exists. Second, the material fight between paper and polypropylene, which is a fight about cost, not performance. Third, resin and kraft paper input cycles, which pass straight through converter margins because bag contracts are short. Fourth, regulation — packaging recyclability rules, extended producer responsibility fees and carbon border charges on the underlying material — which increasingly decides which format a cement producer specifies.

This segment is the natural home for market research on industrial sacks, FIBC and big bags, bagging operations, and the packaging of cement, gypsum, lime, mortar, aggregates and industrial minerals.
