Phosphorous Acid Is Priced by a Power Bill, Not a Rock Price
One oxygen is the whole story
Phosphoric acid is H3PO4. Phosphorous acid is H3PO3. The difference is a single oxygen atom and the entire commercial structure of two industries.
Phosphoric acid is a phosphate: a fully oxidised, stable, commodity acid made in enormous volume from phosphate rock, and purchased against a rock index. Phosphorous acid is a phosphite: a reducing agent, an intermediate, a molecule that is one oxidation step away from being something else, and the parent of a family of derivatives that includes phosphonates for scale and corrosion inhibition, phosphite-based plant protection products, and the phosphorous acid route into the herbicide chain. It also behaves differently in the field, which is why a phosphite is a fungicide claim and a phosphate is a nutrient.
Both are phosphorus. Almost nothing else about them is shared. And that matters because the two are routinely discussed as if one price index covered them.
The branch it sits on
Phosphorous acid is not made from phosphate rock in the sense a fertiliser analyst means. It is made from yellow phosphorus, converted to phosphorus trichloride and hydrolysed. Yellow phosphorus, in turn, is an electrothermal product: it comes out of a furnace whose principal input cost is electricity.
So the first line in the cost stack of every phosphonate, every phosphite and every phosphorous-acid intermediate is a power price, and the second is chlorine. Neither appears in a phosphate rock quote. A buyer holding a contract indexed to rock is hedged against a cost that is not in the supplier’s stack, and exposed to two that are.
The published prices make the separation visible. On 5 September 2025 yellow phosphorus traded at RMB 22,500 to 22,550 per tonne in Yunnan and Sichuan and RMB 22,550 to 22,600 in Guizhou, about 2 per cent lower week on week. In June 2025, 85 per cent thermal phosphoric acid averaged RMB 6,760 per tonne, with Hubei at 6,500 to 7,000, Yunnan around 6,600 and Sichuan at 6,300 to 6,800. Those are two different markets with two different drivers, and only one of them has anything to do with rock.
The inversion that tells you where capital is going
The most informative number in the September 2025 data is not a price. It is a run rate.
Total Chinese phosphoric acid output in the week was 79,700 tonnes at a 54.16 per cent operating rate. Split it: thermal acid 18,900 tonnes at 35.46 per cent, and purified wet-process acid 60,800 tonnes at 64.75 per cent. The thermal branch was running at roughly half the utilisation of the wet branch, and the wet branch is where the new capacity is being added.
The reason is downstream and it is not agricultural. Iron phosphate operating rates were at 68.12 per cent. Chinese output of power and other batteries reached 831.1 GWh in the first seven months of 2025, up 57.5 per cent year on year, and lithium iron phosphate chemistries were 656.4 GWh of that, or 79.0 per cent. LFP cathodes consume purified wet-process phosphoric acid. So the growth capital in phosphorus is going to the wet branch, and the wet branch is bidding for high-grade rock, with P2O5 at 30 per cent or above carrying an increasing premium.
Now the consequence that has not been priced. The thermal branch is the only source of phosphorous acid. Its utilisation is falling, its investment case is being outcompeted by a cathode supply chain, and its feedstock cost is a power price. Every derivative upstream of it inherits that: a supply base that is not being expanded, priced off a utility bill, sold into customers whose own contracts reference rock.
One molecule, three margins
The commercial complication is that phosphorous acid derivatives are sold into three demand curves that share a molecule and share almost nothing else.
Water treatment is the largest and the least regulated. Phosphonates – HEDP, ATMP, PBTC, DTPMP and their salts – are threshold scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors, dosed at parts per million into cooling systems, boilers and oilfield water. The qualification is technical: a data sheet, a dose curve, a compatibility statement. The buyer is an industrial account or a formulator, and the switch cost is a re-validation.
Plant protection is a different product with the same origin. A phosphite sold as a crop treatment carries a registration, with the dossier cost, the residue work and the approval calendar that implies, and the value per kilo is set by efficacy claims and by the approval, not by the acid.
Then the intermediate channel: phosphorous acid is the feedstock in the phosphonomethylation route that leads through PMIDA to glyphosate. That buyer is a single large agrochemical process, contracting on specification and volume, with a cost model that treats the acid as one line among several.
Three buyers, three qualification regimes, three contract structures. A single supply interruption in the thermal branch does not raise one price. It reallocates the molecule, and the allocation follows the margin, which means the water treatment account is the one that gets shorted first because its qualification is the cheapest to redo.
What to watch, and what we will not tell you
Watch yellow phosphorus, and watch the power contract behind it rather than the weekly quote, because the seasonal pattern in the producing provinces is a hydroelectric pattern and it moves the floor of every derivative price. Watch the thermal and wet operating rates as a pair: while thermal runs near 35 per cent against wet near 65 per cent, the specialty derivatives are being supplied by the less-loved half of the industry. And watch where new phosphonate capacity is announced, because if it is not being announced, the availability constraint arrives before the price signal does.
Pheonix does not publish a phosphorous acid or phosphonate market size, and the refusal is deliberate. Phosphorous acid, technical phosphonates, phosphite crop treatments and specification-grade intermediates are four products with four customer bases and four regulatory regimes. A total across them would be a number with no decision attached to it. What is genuinely decision-useful is the branch structure: one feedstock, one utility bill, one underinvested furnace fleet, and three demand curves queuing behind it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is phosphorous acid different from phosphoric acid?
Phosphorous acid is H3PO3, a phosphite and a reducing agent made from yellow phosphorus via phosphorus trichloride. Phosphoric acid is H3PO4, a fully oxidised phosphate made in bulk from phosphate rock. They come from different branches, are priced off different inputs and are sold to different customers.
Why does a power price drive phosphorous acid costs?
Yellow phosphorus is an electrothermal product, so electricity is its principal input cost, followed by chlorine for the trichloride step. Phosphate rock prices, which dominate fertiliser-grade acid, do not appear in that cost stack at all.
What is the utilisation gap between thermal and wet-process phosphoric acid?
In the week to 5 September 2025 Chinese thermal phosphoric acid output was about 18,900 tonnes at a 35.46 per cent operating rate, against purified wet-process acid at about 60,800 tonnes and 64.75 per cent, according to Longzhong data reported by Mysteel.
What is the market size of phosphorous acid and derivatives?
Pheonix does not publish one. Technical phosphonates, phosphite crop protection products, specification-grade intermediates and the glyphosate-chain feedstock are four products with four qualification regimes and four margins, so a combined total would not support a procurement or investment decision.
