Four Per Cent of Phosphate Rock Tonnage Carries Eight Per Cent of the Value — and Every Non-Fertiliser Phosphorus Molecule
October 2026 — Pheonix Research has published Global Phosphate Rock & Yellow Phosphorus Market Size, Share & Forecast 2026–2033, sizing the market at USD 32,310.0 million in 2025 and USD 44,160.0 million by 2033, a stated compound annual growth rate of 3.98%. Volume compounds more slowly than value: rock mine production rises from 250.0 million tonnes to 305.0 million tonnes (2.52%) and elemental phosphorus from 1,120.0 to 1,410.0 thousand tonnes P4 (2.92%). Realised revenue per tonne of rock therefore rises from USD 129.24 to USD 144.79, an increase of 12.03% across the eight years.
The finding: the industrial chemistry is a 3.7 per cent sliver of the tonnage
World phosphate rock mine production was 250 million tonnes in 2025, up from 239 million the year before, on the U.S. Geological Survey’s February 2026 estimate. Almost all of it becomes fertiliser. The share that leaves instead for an electric furnace is about 9.2 million tonnes — 3.70 per cent of the total — and that fraction carries 8.70 per cent of the market’s value plus every non-fertiliser phosphorus molecule in commercial use: the phosphoric acid in a soft drink, the flame retardant in a cable, the scale inhibitor in a cooling tower, the glyphosate on a verge, and the phosphorus trichloride that becomes a lithium battery electrolyte salt.
That asymmetry is the reason the study is not an agri-commodity note. A market of 250 million tonnes priced in dollars per tonne of rock is a fertiliser market. A market in which four per cent of the tonnage carries a hundred per cent of the industrial chemistry is a different question, and it is the question a buyer of phosphorus compounds actually has to answer.
Two pools, counted once
The report counts rock at market value and elemental phosphorus at its value added — the yellow phosphorus price less the rock cost embedded in it — so that the same tonne is not counted twice downstream. Four exclusions are stated explicitly rather than assumed: purified wet-process phosphoric acid sold to cathode makers, merchant phosphonates and merchant phosphorous acid, downstream phosphate salts (STPP, TCP, feed-grade MCP and DCP beyond their rock and thermal inputs), and phosphate fertiliser prices, which appear throughout as a comparator and never as a component of the forecast, because a DAP price moves on a crop cycle and this market does not.
The forecast sits at the base of a four-report phosphorus chain that runs from the rock pool to battery-grade acid, merchant phosphonates and the cathode line, and it is built to be read against those perimeters rather than in isolation.
Companion analysis
How the battery-bound tonne is valued inside the rock pool is set out for a non-specialist reader in The Most Qualified Tonne Sells for the Least, which puts USD 480 of value added in this report against USD 514 in the purified acid report below it, and shows that a 2.75 million tonne battery pool draws 10.12 million tonnes of rock — more than the whole electric-furnace phosphorus industry.
