Cloud Communications Segment Overview

Cloud communications is the layer of the telecom industry where the switchboard stops being an appliance and becomes a subscription. It covers cloud PABX and hosted voice (in Brazil, PABX em nuvem or PABX virtual), unified communications as a service, contact-centre as a service, and the adjacent supply chain of numbering, SIP trunking and business messaging that makes a software platform reachable on a public telephone number.

The segment sits between two industries that do not usually share a taxonomy. Its suppliers include licensed telecommunications operators, because a national geographic number is a numbering resource granted inside an outorga regime. Its competitors include pure software vendors, because the switching function itself has been freely available as open-source software for two decades. Understanding the segment means understanding which of those two facts binds at a given price point.

Structural Scope

  • Cloud PABX and hosted voice for micro, small and medium businesses
  • Unified communications as a service: voice, video, messaging and presence on one identity
  • Contact-centre as a service, including inbound queues, diallers and quality monitoring
  • Business numbering, number portability and SIP trunking as a wholesale layer
  • Business messaging and the WhatsApp Business API as the channel that increasingly displaces voice
  • White-label and multi-tenant platforms sold through internet service providers and resellers

Why the Segment Matters

The economics of cloud communications are unusual in telecom because the marginal cost of a new tenant approaches zero while the distribution cost does not. That combination rewards whoever already owns a business relationship and punishes whoever has to build one. It is why the segment’s competitive map is rarely the same as the map of the underlying access networks, and why price deflation has been sharper here than in any other part of the telecom stack.

Coverage

Pheonix Research covers cloud communications at global, regional and country level, with country coverage anchored on the regulator’s own access, numbering and authorisation data rather than on vendor reporting.
