The Tightest Phosphite Limit in Europe Is Set by a Certifier, Not a Regulator

A wine grape may carry 150 mg/kg of phosphonic acid and be sold as food; an organic wine may carry 1 mg/L and keep its certificate — the tighter ceiling is set by a certifier, not a regulator. And the redefinition Europe enacted on 29 April 2025 moves every reported residue by 25.5 per cent, so a 2023 certificate of analysis and a 2026 one are not comparable. All three ceilings expire with the approval on 31 July 2029, after which the default is 0.01 mg/kg: 15,000 times tighter than the wine-grape limit.

The Same Molecule Costs Three Times More Once It Carries a Monograph

A cosmetic-grade USP 38 lanolin offer sits at USD 14,700 a tonne while the blended figure implied by world trade is USD 4,556. The gap is not a data error - it is the market's actual shape, and it is why the shrinking Australian wool clip has not yet moved the price most buyers pay.

The Plant Is 1,200 Miles From the Fab

The US ultra-high-purity hydrochloric acid market is USD 15.83 million in 2025 and USD 37.40 million by 2033. It is local not because of freight but because the acid is a byproduct of chlorine disposal and a certificate decays with distance — and local means the Gulf Coast, not the fab.

The Tariff Cut 39.5 Per Cent of Autoparts Imports and 9.6 Per Cent of Plastics

Under one decree, autoparts imports from covered origins fell 39.5% and plastics fell 9.6%. The 4.11x gap is not enforcement — it is whether a domestic alternative exists. Mexico imported 78.26% of its chemicals in 2025 and its petrochemical capacity fell 35.9%, so the tariff can re-price supply long before it can replace it.

The Write-Down That Looked Like a Margin Collapse

Zhejiang Wansheng's RMB 960 million loss is being read as the price war arriving. The filing says otherwise: gross margin fell 0.30 points, nine months were profitable, and the entire loss is one impairment at one plant being relocated to Thailand.

Thirteen Months Longer Than Anything Else in the Regulation

Of the approval dates moved by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2316, the two phosphonates were moved furthest — to 31 July 2029, thirteen months beyond anything else in the instrument — while the fertiliser file that would end their premium has sat unadopted since 2022.

The Ration Shrank and the Grade Rose

DCP costs 1.02 per cent of a tonne of feed and 1.60 times its own cash cost in purified acid. Between those two numbers, phytase removes the tonnage and the grade rises.

Six Times MAP for a Phosphorus the Plant Cannot Use

Phosphite sells its phosphorus at 6.2 times what MAP gets for the same element, and earns a 52 per cent spread on a one-step neutralisation — because the plant cannot use the phosphorus at all.

Forty-Seven Per Cent Leaves the Country, and the Ban Is Following It

China exported 46.88 per cent of its tripolyphosphate output in 2025 while the catalogue capped production and output fell 12.14 per cent a year. The export book is not growth — it is displacement, to the places that have not yet banned it.

Where the Chlorine Ends Up

The same phosphorus is worth 5.3 times more one molecule downstream. None of that increment is phosphate chemistry — which is why the herbicide's conversion cost never moved.

Four Tonnes of Chlorine Per Tonne of Phosphorus

Phosphorus trichloride is 22.55 per cent phosphorus. Moving one tonne of the element as the chloride moves 3.4 tonnes of chlorine — and the chlorine credit is 69 per cent of the entire gross spread.

Two Point Four Times the Price for the Same Molecule

On the basis the segment's contained-phosphorus ladder uses, the phosphorus inside a tonne of thermal acid is worth RMB 7,688 and the acid is assessed at RMB 6,760. The discount is not a cost. It is a permission.

The Only Product in the Chain That Sells Its Phosphorus for Less Than the Element

Feed phosphate sells its phosphorus at 0.70 on an index where the element is 1.00 — the only product in the chain that subtracts value. One calculation explains it: the acid a tonne of DCP needs costs 1.60 times the whole cash cost of the product.

Soda Ash Sets the Margin. The Catalogue Sets the Volume.

A tonne of STPP carries 0.7203 t of soda ash, and soda ash fell 18 per cent in 2025 — worth RMB 200 a tonne, 11.3 per cent of the entire gross spread. Meanwhile output fell 12.14 per cent a year because the catalogue says it must.

The Conversion Cost Did Not Move, and the Margin Was 750 Yuan

The conversion cost from intermediate to herbicide moved 2 per cent while the price moved 19. At December's RMB 23,700 the glycine route was within RMB 750 of earning nothing — and the phosphorus inside a tonne of glyphosate is worth 1.49 times the entire gross profit.

The Chlorine Arrives as a Payment, and the Margin Is 201 Yuan

Liquid chlorine in Jiangsu averaged minus RMB 179 a tonne in Q2 2025. Strip that credit out and a tonne of PCl₃ costs more in yellow phosphorus than it sells for — a 3.5 per cent margin that a 10 per cent move in the element wipes out 2.7 times over.

Ninety-Seven Per Cent of the Price Is the Element

A tonne of thermal phosphoric acid carries 4,109 kWh and RMB 7,688 of phosphorus, and sells for about RMB 7,940. That is why 1.79 million tonnes of Chinese furnace capacity sat idle in 2025 — and why the electricity tariff, not the capacity, is the real supply curve.

The Most Qualified Tonne Sells for the Least

Battery-grade purified phosphoric acid is 4.09 per cent of the phosphate market's value and 49.1 per cent of purified acid volume — and it realises USD 1,040 a tonne against USD 1,250 for food grade. The hardest specification in the chain carries the smallest premium, and the pool that grows fastest is the one that cannot raise its price.

Two Markets Are Wearing One Growth Rate

3.98 per cent is a fertiliser number. The 3.70 per cent of rock tonnage that goes into a furnace carries 8.70 per cent of the value and is priced by a tariff and a permit rather than a reserve — which is why three growth rates can all be right and only one of them is a decision.
