Thirteen Labels a Distillery, Nine Owners for the Names

2,661 brand registrations sit across 202 distilleries — 13.2 labels per still. Nine international groups hold roughly nineteen of the names, 0.7 per cent of the register and most of the value, while the denomination constrains where the liquid is made and not who owns it.

100 Per Cent Agave Is a Sugar Rule, Not a Purity Rule

"100 per cent agave" is the claim that carries tequila's premium, and in NOM-006-SCFI-2012 it is a rule about what gets fermented. The same standard permits caramel colouring, glycerin and sugar syrup after distillation, without disclosure — while banning a splash of rum.

Eighty-Two Per Cent of Agave Spirits Go to a Market That Just Started Buying Less

About 82 per cent of Mexico's certified agave exports go to the United States, and in 2025 that market's supplier revenue for the category fell 4.1 per cent on volume down 0.3 — a 3.8 per cent fall in the price of a case, in the same year Mexican production rose 17.7 per cent to a record.

Mezcal Is 1.2 Per Cent of Tequila and the Law Keeps It There

Mexico certified 6.91 million litres of mezcal in 2025 against 583.5 million of tequila — 1.19 per cent. The gap is not demand: 91 per cent of mezcal is legally artesanal and its entire industrial tier is smaller than one hour of tequila production.

The 2032 Agave Crop Is Being Decided at MXN 7.62

Blue agave takes six to eight years to reach harvestable sugar, so the 2025 price did not describe the 2025 market — it described plantings made in 2018. Jalisco's agave area rose 92.1 per cent in six years while the farm gate fell to MXN 7.62 a kilogram, and the replanting that 2032 depends on is not being made.

A Segment That Did Not Exist Before 2020 Sold 60 Million Bottles, Then Stopped

Prosecco DOC Rosé sold approximately 60 million bottles in 2024, up more than 20 per cent, and 60,360,239 in 2025. The fastest-growing segment in wine stopped at exactly the level it was projected to reach — 9.05 per cent of a denomination that grew 1.1 per cent.

EUR 5.90 and EUR 24.00 Are Not the Same Business

A 50-cent change in a closure is 8.5 per cent of a EUR 5.90 bottle and 2.1 per cent of a EUR 24.00 one. Provence spans EUR 5.11 to EUR 6.40 across its own export book; Champagne averages 24.00. The same glass bottle, four times the margin to defend, and completely different businesses.

The Summer Occasion Went to Hard Seltzer and Did Not Come Back

Hard seltzer took the American summer occasion and has now lost it — seltzer dollars down 9.6 per cent in the peak fortnight of 2025, spirits RTDs up 21.8 and wine-based RTDs up 24.2. Rosé did not get the occasion back. It went to a can with someone else's brand on it.

When the Tax Is on the Bottle, the Bottle Stops Travelling

In January 2020 French bulk wine shipments to the US rose 1,094 per cent because the tariff was written on containers of two litres or less. Provence converted 10,000 of 51,000 hectolitres to bulk inside one season. A tariff on the bottle moves the bottling line — and changes what the export statistics measure.

The Colour Is the One Thing on the Label Nobody Regulates

Provence makes 89 per cent of its output in one colour that no appellation defines. Eighty-two per cent of the rosé on sale is from a single vintage and only 8 per cent is non-vintage, so consistency cannot be blended in — it has to be farmed, every year, with no reserve to correct it. In 2025, 15.2 per cent of samples failed.

Provence Is Being Copied and Is Still Raising Its Price

Provence's export price per bottle rose 18.24 per cent between 2020 and 2025 while export volume fell 2.66 per cent — in the same five years the region's own council called its category generic and named "the growing copying of Provence's codes" as the central competitive threat. Both facts are true, and they describe two different bottles.

There Is No Direct Route to a Champagne Drinker

Japan pays EUR 32.03 a bottle and Australia EUR 19.87 for the same appellation in the same year. France, the home market, pays EUR 17.97 — the lowest in the published data. In a three-tier chain, the appellation regulates hectares and cannot regulate a listing.

Champagne Shrank at the Top and Grew at the Edges

Prestige cuvées fell 17 per cent to 7 million bottles while low-dosage Champagne rose 16.1 per cent and vintages 4.8 per cent. The tiers that grew in 2025 carry a legible fact on the label — a dosage figure, a year. The tier that fell carries only a name.

The Champagne Pyramid Is a Spike, Not a Triangle

Prestige cuvées are 4.6 per cent of Champagne's export bottles and 15.7 per cent of its export value — about EUR 81.91 a bottle, or 3.41 times the average. Brut non-vintage is 77.9 per cent of the bottles at EUR 20.06, below the average. The pyramid is a spike.

Champagne Is Holding 4.81 Years of Itself

The appellation is carrying 1.28 billion bottles — EUR 27.42 billion of wine at current ex-cellar values, against EUR 5.7 billion of annual revenue. That is 4.81 years of shipments against a stated target of 4.2, roughly 162 million bottles more than the appellation wants to hold.

Grower Champagne Sells for 30.9 Per Cent Less Than the Houses

Champagne's 16,460 growers and 120 cooperatives shipped 74.2 million bottles for EUR 1.3 billion in 2025. The 410 houses shipped 191.9 million for EUR 4.4 billion. Per bottle that is EUR 17.52 against EUR 22.93 — in the same appellation, under the same method, and the grower premium is a discount.

One Category, Two Price Systems

Gin sells at USD 2.53 a litre in the Philippines and USD 14.27 at the world average — 5.64 times apart. The largest volume block in the category is also the one where the biggest participant cannot be sized, and where a Western trademark competes carrying premium-brand costs.

Two Owners, One Asset, Opposite Decisions

Pernod Ricard closed Beefeater's visitor centre while running a "Spirit of London" campaign. Bacardi renovated Bombay Sapphire's. Same asset, opposite decisions — because a distillery gate is a distribution channel whose value is inversely proportional to the brand's reach.

The Mixer Learned to Grow Without the Gin

Fever-Tree's UK revenue fell 2 per cent while gin volume rose 1 per cent, and 45 per cent of its revenue now comes from beyond tonic. The premium mixer grew on a gin-and-tonic occasion that is not where the world's gin volume is growing — and its EBITDA margin fell from 13.7 to 11.3 per cent proving it.
